Don't get caught up in the hype! Why pay more for highly processed, sugary yogurts that claim to add back the nutrients yogurt contains naturally. One 4 ounce container can contain a whopping 20 grams of sugar! That is an astonishing 5 whole teaspoons of sugar in a single half cup serving! Try purchasing larger containers of plain low or non fat yogurt. It will save your wallet, your health and the environment by reducing the number of containers consumed weekly. Just add your favorite fruits and nuts to create a complete, wholesome, delicious treat for breakfast or any time of day. Some great brands to look for include: Nancy's Cultured Dairy and Soy, Stonyfield Farm Organic Yogurt and Mountain High.

Keeping this dish inexpensive and other great tips:
- The truth about sweeteners? Good question! It depends on who you ask. Sugar, fructose, corn syrup, honey and molasses all spike your blood sugar. Sucralose, aspartame and saccharine are chemically enhanced which doesn't seem good. They all have been linked, at some point, to symptoms such as headaches, tumors, lethargy, even weight gain! Stevia is natural but some premature reports indicate it might result in cell activity that could cause cancer. Agave nectar might seem like a good alternative because it has a low glycemic index. Agave nectar is high in fructose not glucose which Dr. Michael Eades, author of the book Protein Power, points out on his website. Why does that matter? The glycemic index does not measure fructose! The high level of fructose in agave nectar will result in an increase of insulin production.
- Not sure which sweetener is right for you? Still confused? Yes! Of course you are! You are not alone. It's no coincidence there are so many diet books based on the effects of sugar. Your best option is to talk with your doctor to determine your individual health need. It also won't hurt to be cautious when consume sugar and/or sugar alternative. Everything in moderation.
